Medicare
The Medicare rebate for a standard 50-minute consultation with a clinical psychologist is currently $149.05 (as of July 2026). Medicare rebate amounts may change over time, and we recommend confirming the current rebate directly with Medicare when seeking treatment.
To claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a referral from a GP, psychiatrist or Paediatrician, together with a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). A Mental Health Care Plan generally provides access to up to 10 Medicare- rebated psychology sessions per calendar year.
If you choose to access Medicare rebates, your clinician will be required to provide reports and updates to your referring practitioner regarding your treatment and care.
Medicare rebates generally do not apply to Autism assessments or Cognitive assessments.
Once full payment for your session has been received, your clinician can process your Medicare Rebate on your behalf. The rebate usually arrives in your nominated bank account within 24-48 business hours.
Alternatively, you may choose to claim through your Private Health insurer. Please note that Medicare and Private Health Fund rebates cannot be claimed for the same service.
